Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, but only a registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) has the credentials to back up their nutrition expertise. A RD or RDN at minimum has completed a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university, completed accredited nutrition coursework, completed an accredited supervised practice program consisting of over 1200 hours of practice, passed a national examination, and continues to complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain their credential.
